| PROJECT "MAKING
A DIFFERENCE FOR WOMEN" |
| Vocational Training School for Women in Nepal |
SI Oita-Midori along with our sister club, SI Obihiro started the international
joint project to help women in Nepal in 1995, the same year the UN Platform For Action of Beijing 1995
was endorsed by Soroptimist International. We began building a community center in the Taru people's village,
which was completed in 1996.
The Taru people are an indigenous minority race in western Nepal. However, they have been discriminated
against by the Nepalese government. Since over 80% of the Taru women are illiterate, they are easily cheated
out of their land.
|

A dress making class |
We started a program for those women to increase literacy and to teach new job skills at our center so
that they are able to become independent. We provide money to the Taru Welfare Committee which was founded
to promote education, health care and self-reliance. 245 students have graduated so far and some of them
started their own business.
The success of this project is thanks largely to the efforts of Mr. Kenichiro Sakon who is in charge of
the committee under the unstable condition in Nepal.

Support to "Ocular Inflammation Group"
The group is composed of patients with ocular inflammation including
disease sufferers, their families, doctors and volunteers. The president, Minoru Nishida is a
disease sufferer and he has totally lost his sight due to the disease. However he has accepted the challenge
of his condition and is leading the group. The main activities of the group are to supply medicine to
foreign countries and provide finance to the researchers worldwide.
A large number of Asian women living along the Silk Road are suffering from Silk Road Disease(
disease). SI Oita-Midori has supported this group since 2001. We hope the etiology for
disease is advanced and all of the patients in adversity will be cured. |
